Young people 'should be taught about home improvement'An expert has advised that it is cheaper in the long run if people know how to do some home improvement work themselves.It is a good idea to teach children about home improvement and DIY so that they feel confident about doing this type of work as adults, according to an expert.

Recent research by Bosch showed that one in five men hate performing DIY tasks and Melanie Griffiths, assistant editor at Homebuilding and Renovating Magazine, said that the reason for this may be generational.

"A lot of people in their 20s and their 30s perhaps weren't taught those skills when they were younger," she suggested.

However, Ms Griffiths does not believe the passion for home improvement and DIY has gone away.

She said that while people may be scared of learning new skills, they will eventually realise that it will be more expensive for them if they do not learn the basics.

Meanwhile, Golden Gates Housing has invited tenants living in its properties to help in the search for contractors to do home improvement work like installing cheap double glazing, the Warrington Guardian has reported.
