York Scout hut gets double glazing

The building in Heslington is used by more than 70 Beavers, Cubs and Scouts every week and had rotting timber, faded floors and draughty windows, according to the Press newspaper.

As part of the makeover the timber building was covered in green cladding and it also had double glazing, tough vinyl flooring and new heaters installed.

Speaking to the newspaper, Andrew Eccles, leader of Heslington Scout Group, which runs weekly meetings and activities for boys and girls aged six to 16, said: "The new windows let in a lot more light, which improves the entire feel of the building for everybody who uses it.

"The building is also much better insulated now, so we will use less energy and it will be cheaper to run," he added.

According to the Energy Saving Trust, Energy Saving Recommended double glazing can cut heat lost through windows by half.

The renovations were made possible by a £6,300 grant from the Big Lottery Fund's Awards For All programme and £4,800 from the government's Grassroots Grants scheme, which is administered locally by the York and North Yorkshire Community Foundation.
