Women 'tackling home improvements'

Women taking on DIYWomen are increasingly carrying out home improvements and taking charge of projects such as new fitted kitchens and decorating, it has been claimed.Women are increasingly carrying out home improvements and tackling DIY themselves, according to recent reports.

The Times states that TV stars such as Kirstie Allsopp are encouraging more women to take matters into their own hands and get on with tasks such as decorating and fitting new kitchens.

Speaking to the news provider, Collette Dunkley, co-founder of Chix & Mortar, which runs weekend courses approved by the National Construction Academy, said that increasing numbers of women want to learn how to carry out simple home improvements themselves to save some cash.

"We still assume that fixing things around the house is man's work," she said. "But anyone can fit a plug, change a washer, hang a picture or unblock a toilet. It's just a matter of knowing how."

Recent research by B&Q also highlighted a trend for female DIY-ers, claiming that three-quarters of women are more likely to take on home improvements themselves in the current economic climate, adds the newspaper.

Last week it was reported by KPMG and the British Retail Consortium that bad weather had helped drive sales of homewares and furniture, suggesting that people are looking to use their holiday time for home improvements.
