Juliet Kinchin, curator of the Counter Space: Design and the Modern Kitchen exhibition, told the New York Times that in the Victorian era, kitchens were banished to the basement and run by servants or lower-class women.

She went on to say that there were two major changes which happened to make kitchens what they are today.

"Electricity and gas. The modern kitchen could not have happened without the new infrastructure. This kettle [Peter Behrens’s 1909 electric kettle] didn't have to be operated in the kitchen. It can be plugged in anywhere, although it's a lethal combination of electricity and water," she stated.

Recently, the Irish Times featured a cooking space at Arena Kitchens, which features Corian worktops, a Blanco sink and taps with dark oak detailing.
