Windows contribute to "sustainable construction"

Wood, PVC and aluminium frames all have a role in the future of windowsDefra has published a report stating that wood, PVC and aluminium-framed windows have a part to play in creating sustainable buildings.Wood, PVC and aluminium frames all have a role in the future of windows, and a part to play in creating sustainable buildings, according to a government report.

The study, funded by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) summarises the impact that windows have on the environment in the first step to providing industry best practice on sustainability.

One of its main focuses is on evidence about the environmental, social and economic impacts at each stage of the product's lifecycle - from raw materials, through manufacture, installation, use and end of life.

The report also looks at the wide range of government and industry actions already being taken to tackle any impacts and what areas can be considered for future action and improvement.

According to Defra the total stock of windows in the UK housing market is estimated at around 230 million units, increasing by around 1.5 million units a year.

About 20 per cent of these new windows are installed within one year of a homeowner's move and 16 per cent are installed in homes up to ten years old.
