Welsh begin green homes search

Winning designs will be used as part of a new development in WalesThe Welsh Assembly Government has launched a new competition looking for some of the most energy efficient property designs in the UK.A range of new energy efficient homes are to be built in Wales thanks to a new competition.

The country's Assembly Government has announced the launch of an initiative looking for architects to submit their designs for new sustainable and energy efficient housing.

Under the scheme, the designs will be built at The Works regeneration project in Ebbw Vale, which is to be used as a showcase for energy saving building materials and technologies such as UPVC windows and doors when completed.

Leighton Andrews, deputy minister for regeneration, said the competition was "an exciting challenge".

He added: "A particularly important aspect of the competition will be to demonstrate to the construction industry that highly energy efficient homes need cost no more than standard homes to build."
