Wasting fossil fuels 'should be made a crime'

Wasting fossil fuels 'should be made a crime'A leading environmentalist has claimed that homeowners who waste fossil fuels by not making their property energy efficient should be classed as criminals. An environmentalist has claimed that homeowners who do not improve the energy efficiency of their property should face criminal action.

Dr Richard Dixon, director of WWF Scotland, has told the Scotsman that failing to install energy-efficient measures in a home is "as antisocial as drink driving".

In a statement which could see homeowners looking for quotes for new windows and doors for their properties, he claims the government may need to "start forcing" people to "do the right thing".

Dr Dixon said: "I think it should be a crime to be wasting energy. It's clearly a moral crime against the climate, and I think we should be having a discussion about whether it should become an actual crime."

People who do not improve the efficiency of their homes should be fined, he added, stating he was "not suggesting" sending people to "jail for wasting fossil fuels".

Anglian Home Improvements recently announced it was planning to showcase a number of eco-friendly home improvements at the Ideal Home Show.

The exhibition is scheduled to run from March 20th to April 13th at Earls Court in London.
