Village hall gets double glazing thanks to lottery win

A village hall is using Lottery money to install double glazing. The old windows of a village hall in Suffolk are being replaced with double glazing thanks to a grant from the National Lottery.A village hall in Suffolk is getting double glazing after a cash windfall of £10,000.

St James Community Hall in St James South Elmham, near Halesworth, was facing possible closure due to a lack of heat and double glazing, the Beccles and Bungay Journal reported today.

The hall was saved by a grant from the Big Lottery Fund's Awards for All programme, which will pay for the 20 large windows to be replaced.

Chris Bradley, secretary of the hall committee which put the bid together, told the paper the committee was delighted to be able to bring the hall up to date and secure its future.

"Our original windows got a bit tired. They were metal framed, single glazed and draughty so we decided to look at what to do," he said.

Mr Bradley added that the committee was unable to raise enough money to cover the double glazing costs.

The Energy Saving Trust explains that double glazing works by trapping air between two panes of glass creating an insulating barrier that reduces heat loss, noise and condensation.
