According to Deborah Chadfield, division manager at Centurion DIY Conservatories, the temperature of a home extension that lacks quality ventilation can rise to over 40C during hot days.

However, she added that vents in Edwardian, Victorian or Gable-style roofing are an "obvious solution" to such issues, although other alternatives also exist.

"Anti-sun polycarbonate is a good option on south or west-facing conservatories, or alternatively there are a range of excellent anti-sun glass options available to reflect heat and reduce solar gain," she explained.

They also offer benefits like thermal values and easy-clean external coatings, Ms Chadfield added.

Recent research by Halifax found that the addition of an extra room to a home can add over £25,000 to the value of the property.
