VAT cut on renovations 'would rule out cowboys'

The NHIC has backed calls for VAT to be cut on renovations Reducing the rate of VAT paid on home improvements would stop people from falling into the hands of cowboy builders, it has been claimed.Cutting VAT on home improvement and renovation work would help property owners avoid employing cowboy builders, according to an expert.

Andrew Leech, director at the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC), said ruling out such services is the "most powerful argument" for cutting the VAT.

In comments which may interest those wanting conservatory or double glazing quotes, he explained that cowboys often approach homes and businesses with the claim they can carry out projects without charging the tax.

He added: "They have had the wool pulled over their eyes and they have not had a legitimate person doing the work for them and of course the work has then suffered as a result of that.

"It has probably cost them a fortune because they have had to have someone who can do the job come back and go over the whole work."
