Window sills of double glazed windows can be used for growing plants and adding a touch of green to a home, according to a garden specialist.People are making use of areas such as the window sills of their double glazing to give their homes a "fix of green", according to Matt James, garden designer, horticulturist and university lecturer.Mr James went on to say that people are realising that "inhospitable spaces" including front gardens, window sills, balconies, roof terraces, basements and alleyways are areas that should be taken advantage of and "cherished". According to a National Trust initiative to challenge urbanites to transform their window sills into vegetable gardens, there are over 600 acres of growing space available on window sills in the UK. The charity said that, amid high food prices and concern about sustainable food, it is now the perfect time to grow your own delicious, cheap and local 'window food' and you can grow your own meal with just two window boxes.Mr James urged homeowners not to ignore their front gardens: "Even if you've got to park a car in the front garden, there are those corners which could accommodate a meaty evergreen or two," he said.Written by Jack Smith.
