Double glazing with trickle vents to provide controlled ventilation have contributed to a 40 per cent improvement in energy efficiency.Barratt Homes has revealed that its new homes are up to 40 per cent more energy efficient than they were ten years ago as a result of installations by the likes of upvc window suppliers.Properties are also ten times more energy efficient than their Victorian equivalents, the firm stressed. The average annual energy bill for one of the company's three-bedroom properties now stands at £400, compared to the £800 figure for a similar 1930s home, according to figures from the New Homes Marketing Board.Barratt said using upvc window suppliers to install double glazing fitted with trickle vents had helped to improve energy efficiency, as this provides controlled ventilation.Energy-efficient heating and lofts insulated to a minimum 250mm to cut heat loss had also helped to improve eco credentials, according to the firm.Meanwhile, John Alker, head of advocacy at the UK Green Building Council, has predicted that the hung parliament will be good news for sustainability and environmental issues.Posted by Helen Sykes
