Up to 50 Welsh homes to be fitted with solar panelsA village in Wales has won a competition to cut energy consumption.Around 50 homes in the Brecon Beacons could be fitted with solar panels after winning a competition to cut energy consumption.

The BBC reported that the Llangattock Green Valleys project was successful in the Welsh final of the British Gas Green Streets challenge last year.

Now it is hoped that the properties, near Crickhowell, could benefit from photovoltaic panels, while a micro-hydro scheme to supply 60 per cent of the village's energy is also being planned.

"Some of the householders involved in the challenge are opting for better insulation, or to replace old, inefficient boilers, which are two of the key things that can really help you save energy," said Lee Barlow, project manager of the Green Streets challenge.

The first solar system is being installed at Michael and Ruth Butterfield's property, costing £6,500, with funding coming from Green Streets and the Low Carbon Buildings Programme.

Earlier this month, a hostel in Norwich announced that it would carry a raft of green technologies, including solar panels, in order to create more energy than it uses.
