University double glazing effort named top green building innovationAn effort by the University of Nottingham has been congratulated in an end-of-year round-up of the year's best ideas for energy-efficient housing in the UK.Large-scale efforts to improve the state of existing housing stock in order to make buildings energy efficient have been applauded by one leading proponent of green living.

In its end-of-year round-up of the world's efforts to reduce carbon emissions, Greenbang listed its favourite projects announced during 2009, with one offering from the University of Nottingham being particularly popular with the source's writers.

The institution built a house by 1930s standards back in 2008 and, this year, highlighted the building's inefficiencies by upgrading it to expected standards to be enforced by 2016, which will see the government's zero carbon dioxide grades being implemented.

Over three million homes in the UK were built without double glazing windows, cavity wall insulation, loft insulation, draft-proofing and efficient boilers - something the university went about fixing, emphasising that homeowners should consider it too.

As part of this initiative, Gateshead Council announced this week that it is prepared for tough government carbon targets, installing double glazing in all council homes in the coming months.
