The UK is 'not installing double glazing quickly enough'If the UK is to meet its tough carbon emission targets it needs to speed up the installation of energy-saving technologies such as double glazing, according to the Royal Academy of Engineering.Installing traditional energy-saving measures such as double glazing is not happening quickly enough for the UK to meet carbon emission targets, according to the Royal Academy of Engineering.

Scott Steedman, vice president of the Royal Academy of Engineering, told the Guardian that, between 1990 and 2005, a four per cent reduction in carbon emissions from homes was achieved through the normal processes of upgrade, such as installing double glazing. But he said that four per cent is "not a big win really".

He is calling for an increase in retrofitting activity, which would see the supply chain for energy efficiency technologies being driven by the owners of major estates such as universities and the NHS.

"If they take a lead and say we're going to stimulate new products, new skills and training that is going to lead to the decarbonisation of our existing properties, that's a big help," he explained to the newspaper.

Double glazing windows recently helped a new development in London to achieve a 'very good' rating under the BRE Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM), Building Design reported.
