Housing minister John Healey has announced proposals for nine more eco-towns, which will create around 45,000 eco-homes with double glazing.Housing minister John Healey has announced proposals for more eco-towns, which include highly energy efficient homes with double glazing.Mr Healey also pledged to double the amount of financial support given to councils in developing the environmentally-friendly plans to a total of £10 million.Earlier in the year Mr Healey announced that four locations had met the standards required to become eco-towns and a further nine have now been added to this list.Mr Healey said: "The further nine areas are looking at proposals to design and develop to the tough new eco-town standards. "This signals real and radical momentum to change and to re-think how we design our towns and homes for the future."The locations must develop 5,000 homes with double glazing windows and show how they will develop low-carbon school and businesses. Houses, schools and businesses in the towns will be fitted with double glazing as this reduces heat loss and CO2 emissions. The government has set targets of reducing CO2 emissions by 34 per cent of 1990 levels by 2020.Written by James Hall.
