According to energy supplier Energex, electricity is one of the best concealed and most dangerous hazards associated with home improvements.

Spokesperson for the group Mike Swanston said that the festive season is a particularly popular time for DIY, making the dangers more apparent at this time of year.

"Putting it simply, electricity is a killer and unqualified people who attempt electrical work around the home are not only taking theirs and other's lives in their hands, they are breaking the law," he added.

"So any electrical work at all, no matter how small, should only ever be undertaken by a licensed electrician."

Last week, a representative for British Eco Energy said that it is now simple to install a number of products in a home that will help make it more energy efficient.
