Study highlights home security concerns

Homeowners should do more to protect their properties, it has been suggestedNew research from Halifax has revealed that many homeowners are failing to protect themselves from opportunistic thieves.Homeowners have been urged by a leading insurance provider to do more to protect themselves from opportunistic burglars.

Research by Halifax Home Insurance found that 22 per cent of people do not lock windows or doors while they are in the home, with one in six also claiming to not have any cover in place.

The insurer's own data highlighted that such people could be putting themselves at serious risk, as 29 per cent of burglaries last year were unforced through open or unlocked UPVC windows or doors.

Martyn Foulds, senior claims manager of Halifax, said: "When it's warm outside people often leave windows and doors open to keep cool, but many don't realise that burglaries often happen while the homeowners are at home, as opportunist burglars reach in through open doors and windows to grab whatever they can."

Superintendent Chris Bithell of Lancashire Constabulary recently described locking UPVC windows and doors as a vital part of crime prevention.ADNFCR-2394-ID-19308687-ADNFCR
