will solar panels be as popular as double glazing by 2020?The Renewable Energy Association has welcomed a new government scheme to reward people for producing green energy and said it hopes solar panels and heat pumps will be as common as double glazing by 2020.New government schemes are making it easier for households to switch to greener energy so solar panels could soon be as popular as double glazing windows, according to the Renewable Energy Association (REA).

On Monday (February 1st), energy and climate change secretary Ed Miliband announced a scheme under which individuals and communities who install green energy-producing technologies, such as solar panels, are given cash rewards.

REA policy director Gaynor Hartnell welcomed the scheme saying that it will empower the UK's citizens as they will be in charge of their energy supply and no longer be "tied" to fossil fuels.

"Come 2020 we hope installing renewables such as solar panels on roofs or heat pumps in backyards will be as everyday as putting up satellite dishes or installing double glazing," said Ms Hartnell.

Energy-saving features such as double glazing windows may seem expensive to install, but they will pay for themselves in around six years due to the amount of money saved on heating bills, consumer champion Which? asserted at the end of last year.
