Social housing projects are to test the efficiency of low carbon technologies, such as double glazing, thanks to £17 million of government funding.Some 87 social housing projects across the UK are to test low carbon technologies, including cheap double glazing, to assess their effectiveness at reducing energy waste.The Retrofit for the Future project is backed by £17 million of government funding and is being delivered through the Technology Strategy Board's Small Business Research Initiative.One of the projects is the refitting of a property in Eltham, Greater London. This building is to be fitted with a number of energy saving items such as insulation but, as it is in a conservation area, cheap double glazing may not be permitted."At least 80 per cent of the houses we'll be living in by 2050 have already been built. So it is critical that we look at ways to dramatically improve the performance of our existing housing stock," Greenwisebusiness.co.uk reported David Bott, director of innovation programmes at the Technology Strategy Board, as saying.James Randerson, editor of the Guardian's environment website, wrote recently that he is renovating a Victorian terrace house and suggested he is considering installing cheap double glazing in an attempt to improve the property's energy-saving credentials.Posted by Tom Sands
