Smart meters, to be installed in all homes by 2020, will show people how much money the could save if they installed double glazing and other energy-saving home improvements, according to the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.Smart meters will provide some people with the incentive to make changes in their home to reduce energy consumption, such as installing double glazing, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (Rics) has suggested. The Department of Energy and Climate Change announced yesterday (December 2nd) that all homes in the UK will have smart meters from their supplier by the end of 2020.Gillian Charlesworth, director of external affairs at Rics, said: "People will be more motivated to get insulation, double glazing and energy efficient appliances if they can actually see how much extra money they are saving."She added that homes are a significant source of carbon emissions and said that, while changes can be made to the fabric of buildings, behavioural change by the people who use them also plays a vital role. The Energy Saving Trust recommends a number of simple ways of saving energy and money and helping to prevent climate change, including closing curtains at dusk to stop heat escaping through windows, turning lights off when leaving a room and fixing dripping hot taps.
