Sheffield library installs cheap double glazing without altering visual quality

Double glazing has been used in the restoration of the University of Sheffield's library in such a way that it has not altered the visual quality of the building.

Avanti Architects are in charge of restoring Gollins Melvin Ward's Western Bank Library and have use double glazing to improve the energy efficiency of the building, Building Design reports.

"The major visual change to the building has been the clearing-out of the entry corner, remaking of the mezzanine exhibition gallery and freeing-up of the main staircase," Peter Blundell Jones writes in the specialist magazine.

Inside the main room of the library, the ceiling has been restored and the roof lights replaced.

Different lamp types have been installed, as have motion sensors to turn off lights when they are not required. This has resulted in a 45 per cent reduction of energy use, Mr Jones explains.

Earlier this week, the Guardian reported that at least ten per cent of new homes in the UK fail to meet the energy efficiency requirements set out by the government.

Installing cheap double glazing is a great way of improving the energy efficiency of a property as it can cut heat loss through windows by half.
