Scottish homeowners urged to apply for energy-saving home improvementsThe Scottish government is urging residents to apply for free energy-saving home improvements, which reduce heat loss in a similar way to double glazing windows.Installing double glazing windows can considerably reduce heat loss and the Scottish government is currently urging homeowners to apply for grants for similar energy-saving home improvements as soon as possible to avoid feeling the cold in future bad spells of weather.

Young families, people on benefits and the elderly are entitled to a variety of free energy saving and draft-proofing measures.

Housing and Communities Minister Alex Neil said: "These past few weeks everyone has been feeling the cold but no-one should feel they can't keep themselves or their family warm."

"We need to send out a strong message, especially when it's bitterly cold, that real help is available," he added.

The £60 million scheme, called the Energy Assistance Package, supplies roof and wall insulation and central heating systems to those that are eligible.

The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) recently called on Gordon Brown's government to encourage Brits to make energy-efficient improvements to their houses, such as installing cheap UPVC windows, after world leaders failed to devise a treaty to tackle climate change.
