Schools urged to improve energy efficiency by 2013

Double glazing windows improve energy efficiencyMore UK schools could install double glazing windows after being urged by the Zero Carbon Task Force to improve energy efficiency.Schools will be expected to install double glazing and other measures to improve energy efficiency in the near future, according to a new report.

The Zero Carbon Task Force has set out its recommendations for schools which have been accepted by the government, including the need for at least four zero-carbon schools to be delivered by 2016.

Schools will also be required to reduce CO2 emissions from new school buildings by around 80 per cent on 2002 levels by 2013.

Carbon reduction measures, such as double glazing and insulation, must also be a priority from the design through to the operation of school projects.

Schools secretary Ed Balls said: "It's not just about making new buildings green - existing schools can be adapted to make them more efficient.

"Governors and headteachers also need to seize the initiative and not bury their heads in the sand."

The report is published just a week after schools minister Vernon Coaker announced £1.8 million in funding for school improvements under the National Challenge Trust and National Challenge Federation in Lincolnshire.
