School pupils to benefit from double glazing

Teacher with childrenPupils at a Peeblesshire school have said goodbye to a building that has been home to generations of them for over 150 years.

Since 1858, children at Halyrude Primary in Peebles have been taught at the Old Church Hall, but lessons are now moving around the corner following the completion of a £2.1million redevelopment project at the old Kingsland Primary school on Rosetta Road.

According to a report by the Peeblesshire News, work began last year to refurbish the Grade B listed building. Along with the construction of six classrooms and learning support areas, work has been done to make the school as energy efficient as possible.

Double glazing and energy saving windows been fitted to minimise the amount of heat being lost through the windows, and a new heating system will also help ensure that utility bills are kept down. New electrical wiring has been installed, as well as disabled access.

Addressing the crowd at the official opening of the new school building, headteacher Jim Fitzgerald said: "Thank you all for being a part of our journey and story - not just this morning, but throughout the planning and building process.

"It has been a process characterised by marvellous teamwork and a real spirit of co-operation and willingness to work together to achieve the best out of the project."
