Savings 'motivate homeowners to make properties greener'

People tend to want financial benefits from energy efficient measures, it has been claimedHomeowners are more likely to make energy efficient improvements to their properties if they can save money, it has suggested.Property owners are more likely to consider green home improvements if they will provide a financial benefit, according to an expert.

Gordon Miller, founder of whatgreenhome.com, has backed the Federation of Master Builders' (FMB's) call for financial incentives to be introduced to encourage people to boost their energy efficiency.

He claimed that such schemes could be popular as people who consider such renovations "are motivated by money rather than environmental issues".

"If people can see that they will save money on their energy bills, and in doing so reduce CO2 emissions and thus slow climate change, they will act," he added.

The FMB recently claimed that the government's plans to retrofit every home in the UK by 2030 will not be a success unless more is done to get property owners involved.
