Renovation issue 'dropped from government plans'

Regulations expected to be featured in a consultation have been dropped, it has been claimedThe government's new consultation on making properties more energy efficient does not address an issue related to renovation work.Construction industry bodies have criticised the government for removing a measure linked to home improvement work from its latest housing consultation.

Announced by housing minister John Healey last week, the document was expected to include a Part L section which would see compulsory energy efficiency work carried out on properties being renovated.

However, it is believed the issue was dropped from the document at the last minute, causing concern among industry experts.

Paul King, chief executive of the UK Green Building Council, told Architects' Journal that the measure could have signalled "a serious shift in policy".

He added that the move may have also boosted the home improvement sector and helped efforts to cut carbon emissions produced by property.

Proposals featured in the consultation included calls for a 25 per cent increase in energy efficiency standards for new homes and buildings from October next year.
