Dan Welch, co-editor of Ethical Consumer Magazine, said that "one person's junk is another person's treasure".

However, Mr Welch acknowledged that some items could require extra work and repairing some types of household goods may prove difficult.

He explained: "Something that's frustrating for a lot of people trying to live greener is that it's so hard to get small electrical items fixed. We could do with some more cottage industry in that area."

Mr Welch added that there are many recycling schemes, such as the Wesley Community Furniture organisation in Greater Manchester, that will accept unwanted products, which should be considered when updating a property with new kitchen quotes.

A study by Kelkoo.co.uk earlier this year revealed that British residents pay an extra 44 per cent on average for items which carry higher green credentials than standard goods.
