This revolution has been sparked by the recent collapses of high-profile PVC manufacturers and mergers between other companies, Steve Thorogood, managing director of Admiral Admiral Windows and Conservatories, told Cambridgenetwork.co.uk.

"The fact is that many discerning clients just do not like plastic anymore as a window material. They often specifically ask what the alternatives are," he added.

Mr Thorogood went on to suggest that the interest in cheap double glazing with wooden frames has increased recently at the expense of upvc window suppliers.

Earlier this week, home improvements expert Jeff Howell wrote in his Daily Telegraph column that people replacing their leaded-light windows because of rotting timber frames should opt to install cheap double glazing with wooden frames.

This would increase a property's energy efficiency but would not alter its appearance.
