Quarter of over-50s 'go professional for renovation work'

Saga published the home improvement findings One in four people over 50 in the UK employ tradesmen to carry out home improvement work on their properties, new figures have revealed.A quarter of over-50s tend to employ professional help to ensure home improvement work is carried out properly, according to new research.

The study by Saga Home Insurance found that one in four people in the age bracket never carry out such work themselves, with the same amount choosing to get hired help in to undertake the project.

In news which may interest those seeking a double glazing or conservatory quote, 21 per cent of people under 50 also had to call in professionals to fix a botched job.

Andrew Goodsell, executive chairman of Saga Financial Services said: "Homeowners should check they have accidental damage cover as part of their home insurance, just in case their DIY dreams turn in to DIY disasters."

Recent figures from Sainsbury's Home Insurance found that the average cost of home improvement work now stands at £1,162.
