Public 'must get behind energy efficiency'

The public needs to take responsibility for energy efficiency, it has been suggestedA local government official has called on homeowners to do their bit to improve their energy efficiency. The British public should not just expect government and councils to improve energy efficiency, it has been claimed.

In comments which may encourage people to add energy saving measures to their homes, Staffordshire Council's cabinet member for development and regeneration Robert Hardwick has called on property owners to take responsibility for their carbon footprint.

According to the Burton Mail, the council is actively looking to support projects that will raise awareness of efficiency in the area.

Mr Hardwick added to the newspaper: "The government and local authority can't do it all. It's down to them. I don't think that message has clearly got out to people yet."

Gordon Miller, founder of whatgreenhome.com, recently echoed Mr Hardwick's comments, claiming that "grand gestures" may be needed to encourage people to improve the efficiency of their properties.
