A study finds people are unaware they have to tell their building insurer about extension work.Property owners looking to make large home improvements have been warned to inform their building insurer before commencing work.Research by Sainsbury's Home Insurance has found that 29 per cent of people planning major structural home improvement work were not aware they needed to inform their insurer of the plans before work started.The survey found that 551,000 Brits are planning to put a conservatory on their property in the next 12 months, while only 20 per cent thought about contacting their insurer.Joanna Mallon, Sainsbury's Home Insurance manager, said creating extra space is an option for homeowners who have "put their plans to move on hold".She added: "Buildings insurance premiums are calculated based on a number of factors, such as the type of house or the number of bedrooms it has, so creating extra rooms can have an impact on your premium even if you have unlimited cover."Moneysupermarket.com recently advised people living in Nottingham and London to check their home contents insurance is up to date after research found people in these areas are most likely to be at risk of burglary.Helen Sykes
