'Prepare for next winter' by installing double glazing

Double glazed windows can cut bills and reduce energy loss. The current cold snap has left many people feeling uncomfortable in their own homes, but to prevent the same from happening next year, they should consider installing double glazing.Homeowners should prepare for next winter by installing double glazing, it has been suggested.

Those wanting to keep their homes warm can do so in a number of ways without having to turn up the heating, a feature for the environment section of the Times suggests.

Those that have single glazing should consider installing double glazing as it has a U-value of between 2.7 and 3.1, compared to 5.4 to 5.6 for single glazing, the newspaper reports.

U-values refer to the amount of heat lost through a material - the lower the number, the lower the amount of heat lost.

According to the Energy Saving Trust, double glazing windows can cut household bills by around £135 a year and can reduce carbon emissions by 720kg per annum.

The newspaper also recommends homeowners use draught excluders to prevent heat escaping under doors and to draw their curtains to reduce the amount escaping through windows.
