Police in Wickford, Essex, are advising local residents to lock their double glazing windows and cheap patio doors to ensure burglars do not have easy access to their homes.Residents in Wickford, Essex, have received leaflets from the police warning them to lock their windows and doors after a recent spate of burglaries in the area.Bluetooth video messages have also been sent out by the police showing how to avoid being targeted by burglars, the Echo reported.Ten burglaries have taken place in the Castleton ward of Wickfield and six of these also involved car thefts. The burglars broke into the houses, perhaps through unsecured patio doors or unlocked cheap double glazing windows, and took belongings and car keys so that the vehicles could be quickly driven away.Chief inspector Simon Dobinson, of Basildon police, said: "Modern cars are likely to be fitted with an immobiliser, which is so effective thieves now resort to breaking into houses to take the keys to allow them to steal the vehicle."New UPVc windows, when properly locked, make it more difficult for burglars to gain access to properties. The glass used is difficult to break and, when it does, a lot of noise is created.Written by Liam Cass.
