Parents should work with their children when thinking of ideas for their rooms so that they create a fun and welcoming place that also supports their offspring's "personal passions", interior designer Debbie Travis wrote in her column for website yourhome.ca.

"This may be the time to splurge on good quality furniture that will last through the teen years," Ms Travis advised.

She recommended investing in a daybed as they are available in a number of different styles and can be great for sleepovers.

As children grow up, the character or theme of their bedrooms can easily be changed using different comforters and pillows, she added.

Those who have finished decorating their bedrooms, but are now seeking a bathroom quote should make sure they opt for plenty of storage, Ms Travis wrote in a separate article.
