Oxford Police warn residents to keep double glazed windows shut

Police are advising people to shut their windows to keep burglars out. Residents of Oxford are being advised to keep their windows shut to reduce the risk of burglary.Police in Oxford are warning people to keep their double glazed windows shut as part of a campaign to reduce burglaries in the city.

The Oxford Mail reported that police have been taking to the streets reminding residents of the importance of keeping windows shut to make their homes more secure.

"It's all part of Operation Breaker, a six-month scheme which began in July, focusing on house burglary," Detective Sergeant Marc Tarbit told the newspaper.

The operation focuses on crime reduction and intelligence-based arrests as well as "disruptive patrolling of known offenders".

Police said that students are one of the groups most vulnerable to burglaries as they generally have a lot of valuable belongings in one house, such as several laptops.

According to Windowinfo.co.uk, 75 per cent of burglars' entry is gained by forcing a window vent or breaking the glass. It advises double glazing, particularly to the rear or side of the property as these windows are at a lower risk of attack.
