Over-50s 'stepping up home security'

Figures have suggested over-50s are making their properties more secureHomeowners over 50 have taken steps to improve their home security, it has been claimed.New figures have suggested that property owners aged 50 or over have increased their levels of home security.

Research from Saga has revealed the number of home theft claims made by its customers has fallen by around 18 per cent when compared to figures collected over the past ten years.

Consumers who have invested in alarms and other security measures may stand in good stead in the near future, as the firm also revealed that June 6th is the day of the year when the highest number of home burglaries are reported by Saga customers.

Andrew Goodsell, executive chairman of Saga Group, said: "If people are going away for a fortnight or just popping out for the evening, they should always check their property is as safe and secure as possible.

"A few simple steps will put off the opportunistic thief and could save the distress of returning to a ransacked home."

Detective Sargeant Andy McGillan of Cheshire Police recently claimed that home insurance policies could be made invalid if people do not ensure their properties are secure.
