Over-50s 'more worried about burglary than ever before'

Over-50s in the UK are more concerned about burglary than ever before, research has revealedPeople heading towards retirement are more concerned about being burgled than ever before, new figures have revealed. The over-50s population in the UK is more concerned about burglary than ever before, according to new research.

Figures from insurer RIAS have revealed that 23 per cent of those heading towards retirement – approximately 4.1 million people - are more worried about being robbed than 12 months ago.

In order to calm such concerns, the company has published advice on home security, calling for any UPVC doors to be fitted with a three-point multi-locking system.

All windows should have key-operated locks, while a mortice deadlock must be added to the main entrance, the insurer added.

Janet Connor, managing director of RIAS, said: "Ensuring consumers take basic precautions to protect their homes is more important than ever against the backdrop of these burglary statistics."

Police on Merseyside have recently been highlighting the issue of home security by trying door handles at night to ensure they are locked.
