Over 3,000 Plymouth council houses to get double glazing

Over 3,000 Plymouth council houses to get double glazingThousands of council homes in Plymouth are set to get double glazing, new kitchens and bathrooms as the city council moves one step closer to selling the housing stock to Plymouth Community Homes.More than 3,000 council homes in Plymouth are to get double glazing when non-profit Plymouth Community Homes (PCH) takes on all 15,000 of Plymouth City Council's houses.

As well as getting cheap double glazing, 14,000 of the houses will get new kitchens and bathrooms, 5,000 will benefit from improved heating and thousands more will be given new front and back doors, including patio doors, the Herald reported today.

According to the newspaper, the transfer must now be rubber-stamped by the secretary of state for communities and local government ahead of the new transfer date - November 16th.

Last year, 67.49 per cent of council tenants voted in favour of transferring the ownership and management of their homes.

Councillor Peter Brookshaw, cabinet member for safer and stronger communities, housing and supporting people and community cohesion, said: "We are delighted with the result, which means the money will be available for the repairs and modernisation tenants' homes need to bring them up to the standards they deserve and to keep them that way in the future."
