The Scottish government has set out new rules for the construction of houses that could see more homes fitted with cheap double glazing.Cheap double glazing could be used in new homes in Scotland after the government set out new rules surrounding construction. The Building Standards Technical Handbook will come into force in October 1st and includes enhanced energy standards for new buildings. These standards aim to reduce emissions by 30 per cent compared to 2007 levels and by 70 per cent on emissions in 1990. Sound insulation used in partition walls and floors is to be improved in new builds under the new rules and sound insulation in existing homes is also to be tested. Jason Orme, editor of Homebuilding and Renovating Magazine, said that sound proofing is particularly important in Scotland because of the wide use of timber frames instead of conventional masonry block-work. "That's something that the timber frame industry has been addressing over the past few years, but it's interesting that it has been put into the regulations," he added. Cheap double glazing traps air between two panes of glass which can reduce noise pollution from outside, according to the Energy Saving Trust.Posted by Jack Smith
