New scheme makes energy-saving technology 'available to the masses'

Solar panels, like double glazing, can cut carbon emissions.Under a new government scheme, solar panels, like double glazing, are something that most people can now have in their homes, British Eco Energy has suggested.Solar panels are following the lead of double glazing windows in being affordable and attainable ways of reducing the bills of households and businesses alike, British Eco Energy has suggested.

The government announced yesterday that, as of April 2010, communities and households who install solar panels and wind turbines will be able to claim payments for the electricity that these devices produce.

Andrew Moore, managing director of British Eco Energy, said that, for the first time, solar panels have become a "realistic proposition" for people in the UK.

He went on to say that: "This announcement takes renewables from being a niche market for very green people or very wealthy people, to something that most people can do. It's very exciting. It's a major shift. "

Houses with double glazing windows can already save around £135 a year on their heating bills, but under the new scheme, those who install solar panels could earn £900 and save a further £140 on household bills.
