Houses built from 2016 must have double glazing and insulation to ensure they are carbon neutral, housing minister John Healey has confirmed.England will be the first country in the world to make it a legal requirement for new homes to produce zero carbon emissions, housing minister John Healey has confirmed. From 2016 homes will have double glazing and better insulated walls, ceilings and floors in order to meet proposed energy efficiency standards.Improved energy efficiency is expected to save the average household up to £150 a year in bills. In addition to the new targets, Mr Healey pledged an extra £3.2 million for research into how energy efficient homes can be designed and built using new technologies and materials."We're determined to see a cut in Britain's carbon emissions but to do that we have to design and build to new green standards in the future," said Mr Healey.According to the Energy Saving Trust, if all existing properties in the UK installed double glazing, around £700 million would be saved on energy bills as well as the equivalent of around 740,000 household's CO2 emissions.Written by Liam Cass.
