New central heating system, like double glazing, cuts emissions

Double glazing can reduce carbon emissionsA new central heating system that uses water heated deep underground is being developed and, like double glazing, it has the potential to reduce carbon emissions.Double glazing is proven to reduce carbon emissions by cutting heat loss, but scientists are developing a central heating system that will harness heat from deep underground to further reduce emissions.

The scientists and engineers led by Newcastle University are planning to create a twin borehole system, which would allow warm groundwater to be cycled through rocks as deep as 1,000m, heating water to around 30 degrees C.

If successful, the planned Eastgate eco-village in Weardale, County Durham, will be powered or heated by this form of renewable, clean energy alongside four other forms of renewable energy.

Project leader professor Paul Younger, of Newcastle University, said: "By recycling the hot water through what is essentially a huge central heating system deep underground, we can produce an almost carbon-neutral source of energy."

Until this source is readily available, the Energy Saving Trust recommends homeowners insulate their homes well and install double glazing to conserve energy.

It said that double glazing windows can cut a household's carbon emissions by around 720kg a year.
