The Home Office has revealed that the new focus of the Neighbourhood Watch initiative is to provide communities with more tools they can use to protect themselves from criminals.

As part of the week-long scheme, a new website and improved training schemes have been launched to increase public awareness of home security and crime prevention.

Alan Campbell, Home Office minister, said such initiatives show "what can be achieved when local communities work with the authorities to help people feel safer in their homes".

He added: "That is why we are backing their work with £1 million to help them strengthen their organisation and increase their numbers especially in areas and communities that are most at risk."

Fife Council recently announced the success of a local scheme created to provide security advice.

Called Fife Cares, the partnership visited almost 3,000 homes in 2008-09 to provide general safety advice and assistance.ADNFCR-2394-ID-19218940-ADNFCR
