More people need access to energy saving productsEnergy efficient windows and doors need to reach the mainstream.Sustainable buildings and products including energy saving windows and doors need to be made available to the mainstream, according to an industry expert.

Vince Lunn, operations director at SIG, said that sustainable home improvement products are still a niche category at the moment.

"One of the challenges we face all the time is we work with lots of manufacturers and we bring a lot of products and I challenge the [idea] that it is becoming more mainstream ... they are still not [there yet]," he added.

Mr Lunn added that people considering installing eco-friendly products, like cheap double glazing, should be able to have access to more choices.

Recently, City AM stated that there is still a long way to go before the country sees more eco-friendly improvements.

However, the fact that the UK is committed to ensuring that all new homes meet a zero-carbon standard by 2016 should help, it reported.
