'More must be done' to encourage commercial building energy saving

'More must be done' to encourage commercial building energy savingMinisters should phase out the country's least energy efficient buildings, such as those without double glazing, by 2020, it has been claimed.Ministers need to take more action to curb the emissions of the least energy efficient buildings, such as those without double glazing, it has been suggested.

The UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) believes that the government should complement a roll-out of Display Energy Certificates (DECs) across all UK commercial property with a plan to phase out the least energy efficient buildings by 2020.

Paul King, chief executive of the council, welcomed ministerial consideration of proposals to introduce DECs across commercial property in addition to public buildings, which could encourage businesses to seek more double glazing quotes and other energy saving measures.

However, he noted that more needs to be done to properly manage and improve Britain's carbon footprint.

He said: "Phasing out the worst performing buildings by setting minimum energy standards is essential if we're to send a clear signal to the industry on what should be expected over the next few years.

"It is this clarity of policy direction that will spur innovation and enable the investment required in our leaky building stock."

Last month, the UKGBC called for all commercial buildings to be improved to an energy rating of A by 2050.
