'More convenient to extend current home than move'

Cheaper to extend propertyAndrew Leech, the director of the National Home Improvement Council, has said it is cheaper and more convenient to extend a property than move to a new house.Householders have been told it is "much more convenient" to extend their existing property than look around for a new house in the current market.

The words of advice have come from Andrew Leech, the director at the National Home Improvement Council, who added that the cost of moving house in the current climate "can almost be as much as a small extension".

He said that people considering large home improvements could divide an extra large bedroom into two smaller rooms or one with an en-suite.

Speaking about extending properties, Mr Leech stated: "You are getting the best of both worlds – you are getting more room and you are not having to lay out so much money either.

"When you add all the costs together of removals – solicitor fees, estate agents fees - it comes to quite a few thousand and a small extension, built at today's rates, would be quite competitive."

Research from AA Personal Loans found that 24 per cent of all property renovations will involve adding an extra room to a home before the end of the recession.
