A new survey has discovered that the vast majority of people living in social housing schemes are willing to pay to make their properties more environmentally friendly.
Research conducted by Gentoo, an organisation which manages social housing in Sunderland, found that 84 per cent of tenants would be prepared to fork out to pay for environmental upgrades such as double glazing, and solar devices.
The main stipulation that residents had is that the savings made on energy bills would exceed the amount they’d have to spend.
Sally Hancox, director of Gentoo Green, said: "With the new Government Green Deal currently being worked up, we wanted to test if customers had a genuine appetite to pay for energy efficient improvements to their home. Our research findings clearly demonstrate that this is the case, as long as the Golden Rule works."
According to a report by Green Building Press, the survey found that social tenants were most interested in solar panels, followed by double glazing windows and energy efficient boilers.
