Energy-saving features that have been around for years, such as insulation and double glazing, are being overlooked by Londoners, who are instead turning to more costly and 'trendy' technology, the Mayor of London's environmental adviser has suggested.Londoners should be adopting more old-fashioned methods of preventing heat loss, which could include insulation and double glazing, than investing in less effective modern technology, an environmental expert has said. The Mayor of London's environmental adviser said that homeowners seem willing to splash out thousands of pounds for 'trendy' modern carbon emission-reducing technology such as solar panels but are neglecting to install other features that have been available for years and could save more cash, the Evening Standard reports."Loft insulation might be ten times more effective than having a solar panel on your roof or a wind turbine," the newspaper reported Isabel Dedring, environmental adviser to Boris Johnson, as saying. She went on to tell the environmental audit committee that between 60 and 80 per cent of homes in London needed to install energy-saving features, which could include double glazing windows. The Times recently advised homeowners that, although it may be too late for this year, they should install double glazing to ensure that they are prepared and do not feel the cold as much in their homes if the UK experiences similar freezing weather next winter.Posted by Sarah Gower
