London low-carbon zones announced

The funding will help lower carbon emissionsThe ten London boroughs which will be receiving cash towards energy-efficient measures over the coming years have been named.London mayor Boris Johnson has named the first ten 'low-carbon' zones in the capital, which will benefit from cash to help homes and public buildings become more energy efficient.

Mr Johnson announced that Barking Town Centre, Muswell Hill, Archway, Brixton, Lewisham Town Centre, Wandle Valley, Ham and Petersham, Peckham, Hackbridge and Queen's Park will be given at least £200,000 to help cut carbon emissions by 20.12 per cent by 2012.

Between them the zones incorporate 13,000 homes, which will benefit from measures such as solar panels, smart meters and assessments from 'energy doctors'.

"There was a high calibre of bids from across the boroughs and it was a difficult choice," said Johnson.

"But the winning entries are championing the latest technologies, which will help us to become a leading low carbon city," he added.

Earlier this week, a new scheme was launched with the aim of encouraging people across the UK to cut their energy usage by ten per cent by the end of next year.

The 10:10 scheme from the Guardian and filmmaker Franny Armstrong is designed to give people the advice they need to be more energy efficient.
